Speaking at the Geneva motor show, a Renault spokesman has told just-auto.com that “whilst the platform is Z.E. ready, no Twingo Z.E. is currently planned”.

This underlines other moves by the company to scale back its formerly ambitious plans to become a world leader in EVs. Renault quietly pulled the plug on Fluence Z.E. production late last year.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance stated in January 2012 that Daimler would provide batteries from its Kamenz production facility in Germany, and Renault-Nissan would provide electric motors for what it stated would be Twingo and smart plug-in models.

It is not yet known if Daimler intends to go ahead with production of the forthcoming four-door smart electric drive – the combustion engine model (codename: W453) is due to be revealed later this year.

The four-seater smart was previewed by the fourjoy concept at September 2013’s Frankfurt motor show. Daimler stated at the Frankfurt show that smart’s forthcoming four-seat model would be launched in Europe in late 2014. It will be built at Renault’s Novo Mesto plant in Slovenia.

Renault is due to commence building combustion engine versions of the new rear-engined, rear-wheel drive Twingo at Novo Mesto from the third quarter.
