The Portuguese Minister for the Economy, Luis Braga da Cruz, and Sergio Pininfarina, Chairman of the Pininfarina Group, met yesterday to analyse interim results of the P3 Project, which has been under way since the signing of a contract between the Portuguese authorities and Pininfarina Studi e Ricerche SpA at the beginning of this year.

The project has been conceived to evaluate the contribution that a new vehicle could make to foster greater productivity in the Portuguese automotive sector, through greater local involvement in the design, development and engineering of products.

Interim results of the feasibility study, presented at a meeting in Sintra, Portugal, point to the development of a new vehicle concept involving a ‘flexible, modular hybrid powertrain and platform’ designed to target different market niches.

The conclusions of the P3 project are due at the end of 2001 and Pininfarina is expected to be heavily involved in the next phase of the project, building prototypes and exploring ways of bringing vehicle concepts into production in Portugal.
