Yue Jia, a spokesperson for Shanghai General Motors (SGM), has told just-auto that the JV’s Dongyue plant is to build the new Buick Encore. This will be the first Buick SUV to be made in China.

The Shandong province facility will be the second production site for this new model: build for North American markets is soon set to begin at GM Korea’s Bupyeong complex. There, the Encore will be made alongside the closely related Chevrolet Trax*, Holden Trax and Opel/Vauxhall Mokka.

GM China will start selling the Buick Encore within the coming months, the local media launch having just taken place. Shanghai GM’s model is powered by a 1.4-litre four-cylinder turbo engine in combination with six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

The Encore. launched at this year’s Detroit show will go on sale in North America in early 2013 for that region’s 2013 model year. GM sees this model as a rival for the BMW X1.

*The new Chevy Trax SUV will be sold in Canada and Mexico, but not the US. North America’s model will be built at GM’s San Luis Potosi factory in Mexico.
