The Brazilian-made Clio was Renault’s top model in February, with 3,124 units sold.
Renault now expects to sell 100,000 vehicles in 2001 compared with 56,068 in 2000.
To help boost 2001 sales further, the company will next week launch the Clio hatchback and sedan with a new Brazilian-made one-litre 16-valve 70hp engine. Until now, only the Clio hatch has been offered with a one-litre engine, an eight-valve unit developing 55 hp.
The new versions will strengthen Renault’s presence in the one-litre market segment which accounts for more than 70 percent of Brazilian car sales.
The new 16-valve engine is made in the São José dos Pinhais engine plant, in Paraná state, where Renault also has a vehicle assembly plant building the Clio and Scénic minivan.
The engine will also be used in the Brazilian built Peugeot 206 due for launch in June.
Meanwhile, Renault will start selling a revised Scénic in April. The minivan, produced locally since 1999, will finally get the styling and interior updates introduced in Europe last year.
