Nissan will start building the Frontier pick-up in Brazil in December, writes Rogério Louro Alves.
In a co-operative arrangement that parallels Nissan Mexico’s assembly of the Renault Scenic, the Frontier will be made in the new light commercial vehicle plant Renault is currently building in São José dos Pinhais, Paraná state.
The new plant will have an initial capacity of 50,000 vehicles per year. It’s located alongside the French automaker’s car plant and will also make the Renault Master van.
Nissan will add the X-Terra SUV to its locally-built range in 2003 and expects that Brazilian-made vehicles will help it reach a four percent market share by 2006.
Last year, with imported vehicles, the brand had only about 0.02 percent.
