Motors do Brasil will halt production at its São Caetano do Sul plant,
São Paulo state, on four Fridays in August.
The company announced that the plant will not work Fridays from 10 August until
31 August to reduce inventory as a result of falling sales.

GM’s decision avoids giving compulsory vacation to its workers.
Other Brazilian automakers facing bloated inventories, including Volkswagen,
Renault, Ford and DaimlerChrysler, have already ordered workers off on compulsory
vacation.
In total, 5,000 GM workers will stay home on August Fridays instead of reporting
for work to assemble Chevrolet-badged, Opel-designed Corsas, Astras and Vectras.
GM is also changing its Brazilian production mix, increasing output of the
cheaper small hatchback Corsa and cutting the number of larger Astras and Vectras
built.
GM has not yet announced if it will extend the August Friday shutdown to its
São José dos Campos and Gravataí plants.
