GM do Brasil has begun to export Celta hatchbacks to El Salvador, the first time it has shipped the compact model to Central America, writes Rogério Louro Alves.

The batch of 40 cars is the first stage of a GM do Brasil project to export the model to other Central American countries.

“This is a new market that we have started to open and we have great expectations for the future”, said GM do Brasil vice-president José Carlos Pinheiro Neto.







Chevrolet Celta made in Brazil

In December the automaker will ship another 20 Celtas to El Salvador. In 2002 it also plans exports to Guatemala, Aruba and Jamaica, a total of 400 units for the year.


Introduced in 2000, the Opel Corsa based Celta is made only in Brazil and is the country’s fourth best selling vehicle. At around 7,300 units a month, it is GM do Brasil’s sales champion.


The Celta is also exported to the South American countries of Paraguay and Uruguay.
