This volume represents about 35 days of Fiat sales in Brazil and is a result of a slump in demand over the last few months.

Shutting the assembly line will reduce stocks by about 3,600 vehicles and is the second time in recent months the lines have been shut down; last July Fiat ordered 2,500 Betim workers off on 10 days’ compulsory vacation.

The Betim plant employs 10,000 and produces all the car models that Fiat builds in Brazil.
