General Motors has just sacked 200 workers at its São Caetano do Sul plant, São Paulo state, and DaimlerChrysler is negotiating with unions over axing 700 employees at its truck and buses plant in São Bernardo do Campo city, also in São Paulo state.


Fiat took a different tack in the drive to reduce production and and yesterday (10 June) ordered 1,000 workers at its Betim plant, in Minas Gerais state, off on compulsory holiday.


These workers won’t return to the assembly line until 1 July.
