from May, writes Rogério Louro Alves.

The GalvaSud plant is located in Porto Real, Rio de Janeiro state, near Volkswagen’s
truck plant and the PSA car factory.

It will ultimately produce 350,000 tonnes of galvanised steel coil per year
but will not reach full capacity until the end of 2002.

Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional and Thyssen Krupp Stahl invested $US170
million in the galvanising line and around $US66 million in cutting and laser
welding equipment.

GalvaSud will initially supply Brazilian car makers only but will start exports
to Argentine vehicle plants at the end of the year.

In future years the company expects to export to other Latin American countries
and the United States.
