Germany recorded the biggest national decline with car sales in May down 35.1% on last year as the market slumped following the ending of a temporary scrappage subsidy.

ACEA said that the decline reflects the end to government support schemes and the ‘further challenging economic situation’.

For the first five months of the year, car sales were 1.9% ahead of the same period a year ago at 5,943,096 units.

ACEA’s data confirms data released earlier this month by JD Power and published by just-auto.
