An EU official told Dow Jones Newswires that carmakers from those countries – which had promised to develop technology to reduce CO2 emissions – will be criticised for the pace at which these reductions are occuring.
“The car makers have cut their emissions but it’s clear they’re not on target to meeting their commitments,” the EU official told Dow Jones.
It had been hoped that the commitment by car makers to cut emissions would dissuade the EU from imposing mandatory levels.
However, this failure to meet EU expectations once again raises the prospect that the EU may impose strict limits rather than the current system of voluntary codes.
