Spain’s automotive components association says the sector must look to overseas markets if it is to secure further business, as the industry battles severe economic problems at home.

The Iberian country has been battered more than most in Europe by the severe economic downturn and despite myriad foreign OEMs basing themselves in Spain, the supply side must turn to more creative ways to find new markets, said its national association.

“We have been through a difficult time in Spain,” said Sernauto (Spanish association of automotive component manufacturers) spokesman David Antolin at the EquipAuto show in Paris. “Our industry is not quite out of this struggle [although] 2010 was a better year. “What we can do from our side is to improve and push companies [with] more business abroad.

“This is the only way we can do something else because the Spanish market is not moving.”

Sernauto has more than 300 members in Spain representing around 85% of the supply sector.
