“The decision has been taken to reopen the office in Cairo and the production facility in 6 October City,” a GM spokesman told just-auto. “Employees returned to work on 18 August.

“The safety and security of our employees remains important to us and we will continue to monitor the situation closely. It is safe to say [when] we opened our car office, production started the same day.”

German chemicals firm, BASF, has also reopened its offices in Alexandria and Cairo as well as a plant in Sadat City, 94km away from the Egyptian capital. The company had halted operations on 15 August.

General Motors Egypt has been importing vehicles into the country since 1922 and established its first Middle East office in Alexandria in 1926.

In 1983, GM established the manufacturing facility in 6th October City, with production beginning in 1985.
