Nissan has resumed operations at its plant in Egypt as the political unrest in the country cools down following Hosni Mubarak’s weekend decision to step down as president.
The factory, near Giza, which builds the X-Trail SUV, Sunny sedan and pickup trucks with an annual capacity of 10,000 units, had been closed since 30 January to ensure the safety of workers during anti-government protests.

Pro-democracy protests held in Cairo and other cities to force President Mubarak to resign from his post saw the factory shut down for two weeks.
Nissan spokesman Mitsuru Yonekawa said: “The plant was closed out of concern for the safety of our workers. We have not received any reports of damages.”
Some Japanese and other Nissan employees who had been evacuated from Egypt have returned to their jobs in the country, the spokesman added.
