General Motors is believed to have temporarily shut its plant near Cairo as the wave of popular unrest sweeping the country shows no sign of abating.

Protesters asking for the removal of the current Egyptian regime headed by unpopular president Hosni Mubarak, have called for a 1m-strong march today (1 February) in Cairo, leading many multi-nationals to withdraw staff.

Several companies, also thought to include Nissan and Daimler, are also believed to have shuttered factories although when GM’s plant will reopen appears fluid.

“The employee [s] are not in the factory today, but security is here,” a staff member at GM’s 6 October plant 25km from the pyramids near Cairo told just-auto.

“We will start maybe tomorrow, after tomorrow or Saturday.”

Calls to GM senior management in 6 October City went unanswered but further details from GM concerning its Egypt operations were expected later.
