Doosan Enerbility, the South Korean power plant builder, said it planned to establish a new business unit dedicated to recycling used batteries as the market for electric vehicle (EV) batteries and energy storage systems (ESS) continues to grow rapidly.

The company would set up Doosan Recycle Solution, a subsidiary for processing waste batteries to recover minerals including lithium, nickel, cobalt and graphite.

Strategy VP Choi Jaehyuk said: “We decided to establish a subsidiary with an independent management system to make the most of business opportunities in the rapidly growing battery recycling market.”

Doosan Enerbility showed off its in house battery recycling technology in 2021, claiming it was simpler and more cost effective than existing technology with higher “scalability” potential.

The system heats up waste material, separates lithium using distilled water and extracts lithium carbonate through crystallisation. The company claimed the process produced higher purity lithium and was more eco friendly as it doesn’t use chemicals.

The first commercial recycling plant was scheduled for completion in South Korea in the second half of 2025 with a capacity to process 3,000 tons of waste material per year.
