“It features a European-inspired hot hatch look designed to appeal to young enthusiasts, and provides a preview of the next-generation Aveo,” the automaker said.
GM has sold the imported Aveo in North America for several years and two model generations and the redesigned line, as previously announced, will be now be built there in Orion Township, Michigan with plant retooling expected to begin late this year.
The new car is longer and wider than the current Aveo and shares styling cues with the smaller Spark, launched this week in India as the Beat.
It’s also on course for Europe (and other global markets) in 2011. “The Aveo RS concept shows clearly that we are ready to make a big step forward in the small car segment,” said Chevrolet Europe president and managing director, Wayne Brannon.

The show car has 19-inch, five-spoke wheels with openings that reveal large Boracay Blue brake calipers.
Other features include an integrated roof spoiler, centre exhaust and chrome exhaust tips. The exposed motorcycle-inspired rear tail lamps feature tinted aluminium housings and Chevrolet’s bow tie logo.
The matte black interior has gloss black, metallic and blue accents, USB port and ice-blue backlighting for the audio display.
The show car has a 138hp (103 kW) 1.4-litre Ecotec turbocharged engine, which GM also plans to build in the US, and six-speed manual transmission.
GM’s Buick unit yesterday announced it would show a sports GS version of its new Regal at Detroit. The car has a four cylinder, turbocharged, 255 Ecotec engine with six-speed manual transmission and all wheel drive and is billed as a high-tech, high-performance version of the brand’s newest sport sedan.
It has all the expected ‘sports’ features such as larger wheels, modified suspension and brakes, styling add-ons and a black interior and roof liner.
“The idea behind the Regal GS was taking the production model in a more aggressive direction to appeal to performance enthusiasts,” said John Cafaro, Buick design director.
