Nissan North America has announced the first in a series of short films which show elements of its next big pick-up. The 2016 Titan will be revealed at the NAIAS in mid-January.

Codenamed H61L, the next model is due to enter series production in early 2015 at NNA’s Canton, Mississippi plant. Heavy Duty (2500HD and 3500HD) versions should follow in 2016. This is assumed, as there are heavy duty versions of the Nissan NV van, which is built at the same plant as the Titan and on the same architecture.

In August 2013, NNA issued a media release stating that a Cummins 5.0-litre V8 diesel would be available in the second generation Titan. It will have “a torque rating in the mid-500s (lb-ft) and more than 300 horsepower”. The engine will be built at Cummins’ Columbus plant in Indiana, adjacent to its headquarters. As for gasoline engines, NNA will cast, forge and assemble these at its Decherd powertrain plant.

The diesel engine is likely to make up roughly 10-15% of Titan sales, which NNA hopes will be in the region of 100,000 vehicles a year. Nissan delivered just 15,691 Titans in the US in 2013, a 27.3% decline from 2012. The story for 2014 remains grim, with only 19,686 delivered during the ten months to the end of October, a year-on-year decline of 19% for this now eleven-year old truck.
