Volkswagen group’s Czech Republic unit Skoda boosted worldwide vehicle deliveries 4.1% year on year to 81,400 in April, setting a record for that month. Year to date volume was up 9.8% to 324,100, also a new record.

The automaker said it saw “strong sales growth” in eastern Europe as well as in India.

Sales and marketing head Jürgen Stackmann said: “We expect the debut of the Citigo [Skoda’s version of the VW Up] to provide a further boost to our business, despite conditions that have become significantly more difficult, especially in some western European markets.”

Almost all western European markets, with the exception of Germany and Britain, posted an overall decline and Skoda sales slipped 5.3% to 30,400 though there were gains in Britain (22.3%), Austria (15.3%), Switzerland (13.5%), Norway (6.1%), France (4.8%) and Germany (3.1%). The Octavia and Fabia were the most popular models.

Eastern Europe volume rose 28.1% to 12,300 with Russia up 48% to 8,800.

China deliveries rose just 1.1% to 20,400 but Indian sales jumped 36.8% to 3,000.

The Octavia, Fabia and Superb were the most popular models overall in April and the newly launched Citigo sold 400 units.
