Colombian car sales reached 28,205 last month – 16% higher than April’s sales and 1,969 more than the 2011 average.
According to Econometría statistics, May sales were 49.1% more than the same month in 2010. Year-to-date 2011 sales are 131,187 units, 51.3% more than 2010.

Sources in Colombia indicated full-year sales could surpass 300,000 units, but Econometría is holding to its 284,000 models projection.
There was a change in the top ten sellers last month: Kia overtook Nissan and is now in fourth position.
Chevrolet is first at 44,304, followed by Renault; 20,520; Hyundai, 11,487; Kia, 10,421; Nissan, 9,551; Toyota, 6,124; Mazda, 5,510; Ford, 4,096; Volkswagen, 3,247 and Dodge, 1,020.

Three year’s ago, the Power Ministry signed a decree which made obligatory the mix of 85% ethanol in gasoline. This measure will ban all European, Japanese, Korean and Chinese vehicles and most North American models.
Last year, the measure was eased and will be phased in gradually, reaching E85 in five years.
Ministers have not pronounced on the subject, but the European Commission has shown it is uncomfortable by delaying the signature of the Free Trade Agreement.
