The site has an initial capacity of 60,000 vehicles and is located in Nanjing/Jiangsu Province, about 300km (200 miles) from Shanghai.

The first model produced will be the Santana Vista. Shanghai Volkswagen modified an already existing plant on an area of 640,000 square metres to meet VW production quality and productivity standards. The plant consists of press, body, and paint shops and an assembly line.

The company took over about 1,200 employees who have been trained in Shanghai Volkswagen’s plants in Anting/Shanghai.

The new plant is part of a strategy to increase capacity gradually in line with market demand since previous capacity of about 1m vehicles was utilised by over 95%.

The extra plant will support Volkswagen Group’s goal to sell more than 1m vehicles in China in 2008

It delivered about 910,000 vehicles to customers in 2007.

The Nanjing site is the 49th in the VW group’s worldwide production network.
