New vehicle sales in China increased by 5.6% to 2.186 million units in August from 2.071 million units in the same month last year, according to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

In the first eight months of the year sales increased by 4.5% to 17,511,000 units, from 16,755,000 units in the same month of last year, driving by particularly strong demand for SUVs and trucks.

General Motors’ joint ventures in the country sold a total of 328,425 vehicles in August, up by 12% year-on-year, but were flat at 2.38 million units year-to-date.

Honda’sequivalent sales were up by 21% at 128,671 units in August and by 18% at 886,641 year-to-date, while Toyota’s sales rose by 13% to 108,500 units last month and by 7.1% to 841,400 units in the eight-month period.

Ford struggled to keep up with the overall market, with its joint ventures reporting a 1% year-on-year rise to 96,200 unitsin August.
