Toyota has opened its largest R&D centre in Changshu city, Jiangsu province, east China.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (China) (TMEC), the sixth global R&D centre cost US$689m, according to the Xinhua news agency.

The new centre will focus on R&D and manufacturing of new energy cars and new generation engines and gearboxes. Its products are expected to be launched in 2015.

Changshu is Toyota’s only overseas R&D centre with a test track.
