China’s new vehicle market finished last year on a high, with sales rising by over 12.9% to 2.41m units in December, according to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM).

Full year sales increased 6.9% to 23.49m units in 2014, from 21.98m units previously. Sales of light passenger vehicles grew by 9.9% to 19.7m units, while commercial vehicle sales fell by 6.5% to 3.79m units.

Light passenger vehicle sales by domestic manufacturers fell by 4.1%, with a 17.4% drop in passenger car sales offset in part by a 50.4% rise in SUV sales.

General Motors and its Chinese partners reported a 12% rise in sales to 3.54m vehicles, after a 31.9% year on year rise in December to 357,375 units.

Volkswagen delivered 2.76m vehicles in China last year, 10% more than in the previous year, while Audi delivered a further 578,900 units – a 17.7% increase. The group also delivered 236 Lamborghinis, 2,600 Bentleys and 46,900 Porsches last year.

Nissan 2014 sales in December fell 9.1% 121,900 units, dragging full year sales down 0.5% to 1.22m units. Ford’s sales increased over 19% to 1.11m units last year, with sales in December up 13% at over 107,000 units.
