In the first three months of 2014 sales of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in China jumped 120% from a year ago to 6,853 units, according to CAAM (China Association of Automobile Manufacturers).

Chinaautoweb.com said the tally included 4,095 pure-electrics and 2,758 plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). Most of the gains came from the PHEV sector, which saw a mere 301 sales in Q1 2013. In the January-March period, automakers in China rolled out 6,651 PEVs, including 4,024 pure-electrics and 2,627 plug-in hybrids.

Despite the steep rise, sales are unlikely to meet CAAM’s 35,000 full year forecast, the report said.

CPCA (China Passenger Car Association), said BYD’s Qin (or the second-gen F3DM hybrid) was the top selling PEV, delivering 2,384 units. The all-electric version of the Chery QQ, the runner-up, claimed 2,016 sales. Three models of foreign origins also posted results in the increasingly crowded competition: 30 units of Venucia E30 (a re-badged Nissan Leaf), two Telsa Model S, and two Chevrolet Volt, chinaautoweb.com added.
