The newspaper noted that the category includes only cars; other light-passenger vehicles, such as minivans and SUVs, are grouped under total output but not separated.
Total vehicle output in October rose 21.4% to 372,000 units, the agency reported, according to Automotive News, which noted that the rate of gain was down from a 36.8% year on year rise in September.
The production slowdown is no surprise because demand generally slows in October, Yale Zhang, an analyst with Automotive Resources Asia, told the newspaper, adding that the September-to-October slowdown in production was to be expected.
“A lot of people buy cars in September because of the week-long early National Day holiday in early October,” he told Automotive News, which noted that passenger car sales in September totalled a record 200,480 while, for the nine months, sales were up 69% over the same period a year earlier to a record 1,454,522 units.
The industry sold 1.1 million passenger cars for all of 2002, Automotive News added.
