China is to impose a new vehicle purchase tax from 1 January 2001, say Asian news
sources (6/12/00) citing a statement from the Ministry of Finance (4/12/00).

The tax will be levied at 10% of the purchase price and will replace existing
fees charged by both road transport authorities and city governments.
