The Chinese government has released its latest vehicle in-use data which shows 360m motor vehicles were in circulation in the country at the end of June 2020, according to local reports.

The data includes 270m conventional internal combustion vehicles, including 29.44m goods vehicles.

A further 4.2m new energy vehicles (NEVs) were in use plus 68.9m motorcycles. 

The country accounts for more than 20% of the world's vehicles in use with four or more wheels which, according to some sources, amounts to around 1.25bn units.

Vehicle sales in China rose dramatically in the last two decades from around 2m units a year, before the country joint the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in 2001, to over 28m units in 2018 before sales dropped back to 25m units in 2019.

Total new motor vehicle registrations, including motorcycles, fell by just under 6% to 14.14m units in the first half of the year, according to data from the Ministry of Public Security, with local demand recovering strongly in the second quarter after a weak first quarter.

The Ministry said 69 Chinese cities had more than 1m vehicles in circulation at the end of June 2020 while 12 cities had more than 3m vehicles.

Beijing had the most, with over 6m vehicles, followed by Chengdu with 5m.
