Ford and General Motors reported mixed fortunes in China last month with GM sales down 4.6% year on year while its US rival’s volume rose 3%.

Ford China sold 184,906 vehicles in the first four months of this year, up 15%, and 44,340 last month.

The Focus was again in high demand with 17,556 sold in April, up 19% and the  eighth consecutive month the model has seen double digit year on year sales growth in China.

The Mondeo achieved 6,061 sales, a 24% increase. The Changan Ford Mazda Automobile (CFMA) joint venture in China, reported 33,184 sales in April. Year-to-date, CFMA has sold 140,193 vehicles.

Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), Ford’s commercial vehicle JV, reported 73,290 sales for the January-April period, a 27% jump driven by high demand for the Transit which has increased sales by 28%.

GM sold 203,367 vehicles in China in April with sales affected by the government’s decision to scrap some tax incentives for smaller cars. The company’s sales in the first four months came to 888,950 vehicles, an increase of 6.3% over 2010.

Sales by Shanghai GM, its car venture with SAIC Motor, rose by 7.4% to 96,219 in April while GM-SAIC-Wuling reported 100,262 units.

Analysts have forecast subdued growth in the Chinese domestic car market this year after sales surged by a third to a record high in 2010.
