Mitsubishi Motors has started sales of its Grandis minivan in China in a bid to strengthen sales in the market and to reconstruct the scandal-hit automaker itself.

Kyodo News said the launch came a couple of days after the debut of a new version of the Pajero [Shogun/Montero] sport utility vehicle.


The Grandis is imported from Japan and sold for about 300,000 yuan, or 3.8 million yen, in China, targeting mainly families with high income.


Mitsubishi Motors’ vehicle sales in China in 2003 totaled about 150,000 units, accounting for about 13% of its global production, according to the automaker.


Its current share of the Chinese auto market stands at around 3%, but the company aims to raise it to 5%, company officials said, Kyodo News said.
