Honda
will become the first Japanese carmaker to manufacture automatic transmissions
in China this November.
The $US8.3 million investment in local production is seen as significant for
the development of the Chinese car industry because an automatic transmission
is one of the most complex components in a vehicle and requires precision machinery
and considerable skill to make.

Dongfeng
Honda Engine Co has set up a production line at Guangzhou Honda Automobile Co.
to make automatic transmissions for the Accord as part of efforts to lift local
content from the present 45 percent to 60 percent by 2003.
Dongfeng currently makes cylinder heads for four-cylinder Accords but imports
automatic transmissions from Honda’s Japanese Hamamatsu plant.
Guangzhou Honda recently announced plans to add the V6 Accord to its line-up
and boost annual capacity from 50,000 to 70,000 units by late 2002.
It will introduce the seventh-generation Accord in 2003 in a simultaneous launch
with other manufacturing plants in Japan, Asia, the United States and Britain.
