Hyundai affiliate Kia Motors will begin building its Carnival [Sedona] minivan in China in 2004, according to Automotive News.

The report said the minivan initially will be built from complete knockdown (CKD) kits at Dongfeng Yueda Kia Motor Co, a joint venture a few hours west of Shanghai in Jiangsu province.

A manager at the joint venture told Automotive News that production will begin in June with the company planning to produce 30,000 units in 2004.

To accommodate the Carnival, Kia is doubling the Yancheng plant’s capacity to 100,000 units, to be completed by June of 2004, the report added.

Automotive News said that Dongfeng Yueda Kia Motor already assembles the Qianlima subcompact and the Pride subcompact, both from CKD kits.
