Honda has asked the Chinese government for approval to double capacity at its Dongfeng joint venture.

According to Reuters, capacity at the plant is currently 240,000 units. Honda has another joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group, and a 100%-owned export only plant. Capacity at the three plants would rise to 650,000 units a year.

Capacity at the Dongfeng Honda plant would be used to increase production of the CR-V and Civic, depending on market demand.

Honda sold 422,311 cars in China last year, up 31% from 2006.

Honda is planning to raise global production capacity to 4.8m cars by 2010, according to chief executive Takeo Fukui.
