Ford sold a record 582,467 vehicles in China in 2010, up 40% from a year earlier. It sold 56,880 units in December alone, a 52% increase compared to the same month the previous year.
The strong performance was led by demand for the Focus and new Fiesta. The Focus achieved sales of 16,891 in December and closed the year with 172,270 units sold. The Fiesta sold 7,853 units in December, up 50% and 75,199 for the year, an increase of 59% from 2009.

Joe Hinrichs, president of Ford’s Asia Pacific and Africa region and chairman and CEO of Ford Motor China, said: “It’s appropriate that in 2011, the year of the rabbit, we will be moving quickly to bring more of the vehicles Chinese consumers want and value while we continue to expand exponentially in China and across Asia Pacific.”
Changan Ford Mazda Automobile (CFMA), Ford Motor’s passenger vehicle joint-venture in China, sold 41,784 units in December, up 63% and 403,283 for the full year, a 34% increase.
Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), Ford’s commercial vehicle JV in China, sold 14,911 units in December, 26% ahead of the same month in 2009 and recorded total sales of 178,999, up 56%.
Last year Ford and JMC began construction of the US$300m green-field plant in Nanchang and CFMA signed an MOU for a new US$500m engine plant in Chongqing, where a second CFMA assembly plant is currently under construction.
A further 100 full-service Changan Ford dealerships were added in China during the year bringing the total number to 340. Ford also launched the Edge, it’s mid-size SUV, in the country.
