Timed to coincide with a visit to China by German chancellor Angela Merkel, Volkswagen has announced that it and partner FAW Group will erect a further two car plants.

The new factories will be in Qingdao and Tianjin on China’s eastern seaboard, with the combined investment to be the equivalent of EUR2bn (US$2.72bn), according to a Volkswagen Group statement.

Neither partner has stated which models will be manufactured at either plant.

FAW Volkswagen has car plants in Changchun, northeast China, Foshan in the south, and Chengdu, in the west. With the other joint venture, Shanghai Volkswagen, the Group operates vehicle plants in Shanghai, Nanjing, Yizheng, Ningbo and Urumqi, and is constructing a new plant in Changsha, opening in 2015.
