DPCA held a ground-breaking ceremony today (18 May, 2011) for its third plant in Wuhan, China.

The plant will be built in two stages, lifting annual production capacity from 150,000 vehicles in 2013 to 300,000 in 2015.

Wuhan 3 will produce vehicles from PSA Peugeot Citroën’s platform 1. The plant will include stamping, body-in-white, paint and final assembly lines, along with supply chain, administrative and warehousing facilities.

PSA’s Asia chief Grégoire Olivier said at the ceremony: “The start of construction at Wuhan 3 is an important step in PSA Peugeot Citroën’s expansion in China. With this new plant, DPCA will have an annual production capacity of 750,000 vehicles in 2015. Thanks to this manufacturing base, DPCA will be able to grow with demand and increase its market share in China, with a target for 2015 of 5%.”

WardsAuto.com reported that the Dongfeng JV would launch nine new cars by the end of 2015, a dual-clutch automatic transmission and six new engines, with stop/start technology coming in 2013 and a plug-in petrol hybrid in 2014. It also cited a PSA engineer at the recent Shanghai motor show as saying the Chinese operation would launch an electric car in 2015.

DPCA’s sales rose by 15% in the first quarter of 2011 to over 100,000 vehicles, PSA said.
