Daimler sold 32,375 passenger cars in China during the first three quarters of this year and company officials still see China as an important growth market that is faring relatively well in the global economic downturn.

Recent months have seen sales in China slow, but analysts say demand for some high-end makes and models remains strong.

Daimler also plans to introduce the Smart Fortwo car in China from next April. The Smart will be sold at a price ranging from RMB160,000 to RMB200,000 per unit.

Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche announced recently that the Smart brand will achieve its profit goal in 2008 after years of losses.
