Volkswagen Group is expanding its production network in China with a new transmission plant in Tianjin which will have an annual capacity of 450,000 units a year.

VW’s China head Jochem Heizmann said around 1,500 new jobs will be created at the new site and investment in the first stage is EUR230m (US$289m). Production is scheduled to begin at the end of 2014.

Heizmann added: “Tianjin will become a cornerstone of our Chinese production network and a driving force for the economy in the entire region.”

He said VW will also be joining up with local vocational schools to establish a competence centre for tooling technology to train teachers with a view to meeting demand for technically trained and specialised skilled employees in the medium term.

China is VW’s largest market – last year it delivered 2.26m vehicles there. In the first seven months of this year, deliveries rose 17.1% to 1.51m units.
