According to the English-language China Daily newspaper, this production increase by the company – based in the Hubei province, Central China – may possibly result in the establishment of an additional car manufacturing site in China.

The joint venture, which produces Fukang units (based on the Citroen ZX model) with 1.3- to 1.6-litre engines, sold 43,000 units in the first 10 months of this year – a 23 per cent increase over the same period last year. Central Government recently gave approval to the firm for its first-phase output of 150,000 units by 2003 or 2004, says the article.

Citroen – which has a 25 per cent holding in the joint venture – is set to launch its Picasso model through this venture by the year’s end, says China Daily.
