General Motor’s chairman and CEO Dan Akerson has said the Volt may be made in China if sales of models exported from the US take off.

If the automobile is made in China it would qualify for government subsidies of around US$19,000 a vehicle.

Akerson said exports from the US to China would begin by the end of 2011.

Ford has also hinted it may assemble electric vehicles in China.
