Chery, which earlier this month began production in partner Avtotor’s facility, also wants to expand the assembly line’s annual capacity to up to 25,000 units from an existing 15,000 to 20,000 units to meet demand, the executive familiar with the Russian project told told the news agency.

“Orders are piling up at our Russia branch and sales could top 15,000 units this year,” he reportedly said, requesting anonymity.

Reuters said that would be a significant jump in a market Chery entered only last year, shipping 1,700 vehicles.

Chery is also in talks with three potential local partners, including UkrAuto, to assemble cars in Ukraine, the executive reportedly added.

“We hope the Ukraine project will be up and running in July to make some 1,000 Chery vehicles every month,” the executive was quoted as saying.

Chery aims to sell at least 30,000 vehicles outside China this year, accounting for 10% of its total volume sales, another company executive told Reuters.
