A subsidiary of BMW’s China JV partner Brilliance has started local assembly of BMW’s N20 4-cylinder turbocharged engines.

Mianyang Xinchen Engine Machinery Company has begun assembly of the N20 engines at its factory in Mianyang, Sichuan. The engines will be mainly fitted to locally produced BMW cars, with some production also for Brilliance’s Zhonghua and Jinbei own-brand products.

Local media reports say that 10,000 engines are planned to be manufactured this year with annual production capacity eventually targeted at 100,000 units.  

BMW’s Chinese vehicle production capacity under its joint venture with Brilliance expanded to 300,000 last year and could be bumped to 400,000 in the medium-term. 

Last year, BMW Group total vehicle sales in China rose 19.7% to 390,713 units.
