Chery Automobile Company Ltd announced last week that it plans to launch up to 39 new hybrid models globally in 2025, as the Chinese automaker looks to tap in to growing global demand.
The Wuhu-based state-owned automaker made the announcement at its “Hybrid Night and Open-Source Initiative” event last week, where it introduced its latest hybrid technologies and also launched an open-source initiative.
Among the key new technologies unveiled last week was the next-generation Kunpeng Tianqing engine, which it claims achieves over 48% thermal efficiency, which is understood to be among the highest globally.
At the event, the company’s chairman Yin Tongyue said Chery’s hybrid strategy is based on four key pillars: sustainable development, affordability, safety, and reliable range. He pointed out that the company’s newly-developed hybrid engine technology “has reached industry-leading thermal efficiency standards,” adding that the fifth-generation hybrid system’s “Clear Drive Management” enables the “perfect coordination between the electric motor and the engine.”
Chery reported a 17% rise in global vehicle sales to 620,025 in the first quarter of 2025, including 163,458 new energy vehicles (NEVs), while its exports from China amounted to 255,465 units.
