Chinese state-owned automaker Changan Automobile Company launched its premium battery electric vehicle (BEV) brand Avatr in Thailand this week, as the company stepped up its overseas expansion amid fast rising competition in its domestic market.

At an event held in Bangkok, Avatr showcased its 011 SUV coupe which comes with a choice of 90kW and 117kW CATL battery packs and features Huawei’s advanced driving solution (ADS) driver assist system.

Changan already operates in Thailand, mainly through its Deepal brand, with the SL03 and S07 models launched at the end of last year and the Lumin L earlier this year. The company sold 3,200 vehicles there in the first half of 2024, all imported from China.

Changan is investing THB10bn (US$300m) in an assembly plant in Thailand’s Rayong eastern economic corridor which is scheduled to begin operations in the first quarter of 2025. The facility, the company’s first in south east Asia, will have painting facilities, final assembly lines and battery assembly operations.

Shen Xinghua, managing director of Changan Auto Southeast Asia, said in a statement: “Avatr is committed to leading in the development of EVs, meeting current needs and moving toward a future of smart automotive solutions connected to daily life.”
