Ex-Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn’s latest request for bail has been rejected by a Tokyo court. Japanese media reports say that the decision by The Tokyo district court came in spite of Ghosn’s offer to wear an ankle tag.
The ruling makes it likely that Ghosn will stay in detention until his trial and also that he will be replaced as chairman and CEO at Renault. Reports say that bail is rarely granted by Japanese courts ahead of trial – unless there is a confession. Ghosn has denied wrongdoing.

Reuters reports that Renault’s board is expected to meet within days to decide on a successor as CEO. Ghosn, who faces charges of financial misconduct including the under-reporting of income, has been in detention in Tokyo since his arrest in November.
According to Reuters, Ghosn’s latest bail request also included an offer to hire guards to monitor him and a promise to remain in Tokyo. He also offered to post stock he owns in Nissan as collateral, as well as wear an electronic ankle tag.
In a statement released on Monday, Ghosn reportedly repeated his intent to clear his name in court. “I am not guilty of the charges against me and I look forward to defending my reputation in the courtroom; nothing is more important to me or to my family,” he said.
