BFGoodrich Tire Manufacturing, a unit of Michelin North America (Canada), on Thursday said it would close its tyre plant in Kitchener, Ontario this year because of intense pressure from low-cost imports, according to a Reuters report.
The plant, making passenger tyres mostly for the US market, employs about 1,100 waged and salaried workers and will operate until July 22.
BFGoodrich reportedly said the decision to close the plant was largely a result of overcapacity in its North American mass market passenger tyre segment, Reuters added.
The report said that, after the closure, BFGoodrich customers would be supplied by three US plants.
