Car and light truck sales climbed an annual 2.8% to 169,450 in June, according to independent data, with imports climbing almost 16%.
June 2011, spurred by industry incentives, had been a bumper month – the strongest of the year – so the increase has taken observers by surprise.

Toyota posted a 67% increase to 19,100 units; Honda sales were up 42% to 13,500. Last year both companies were suffering the after effects of the tsunami and earthquake in Japan.
Despite an 8.7% decline, Ford Canada was still the sales leader in June and year-to-date, posting monthly sales of 30,450 units, down from 33,450 last year.
Chrysler Canada posted an 0.5% increase in June with sales of 23,705 vehicles; year-to-date sales were up 7% to 130,286 vehicles, the company said.
General Motors of Canada reported June sales down 18% to 22,869.
