The
DaimlerChrysler van assembly plant in Windsor Ontario, which employs 2000 workers,
is a likely target for permanent shut-down as part of DC’s North American restructuring
plan according to Canada’s Financial Post.

Chrysler announced earlier this year that it would invest $Can1.5 billion dollars
into revamping its Pillette Road factory, so that it could manufacture a new
Dodge vehicle.

Since the announcement however several plans for vehicles have been scrapped
including plans for a Dodge-badged Sports Utility Vehicle.

Daimler Chrysler has not confirmed plans to shut the plant down, but the business
paper has cited industry watchers predicting the permanent closure of the Pillette
plant, as part of a restructuring programme for North America.

If the speculation is true, it would be the first closure of a Canadian Chrysler
auto plant since 1980, when the company shut an engine plant in Windsor making
more than 1,000 employees jobless.

This month Chrysler will cease production in eight North American plants for
a week, including the Pillette Road plant and a sedan plant in Brampton, Ontario,
which employs 4,200 workers.

Chrysler has also cut hours at its minivan plant in Windsor which has 6,400
employees.
