Vehicle sales in Canada hit a record, jumping almost 8% in August led by strong demand in Ontario, the country’s most populous province.
Sales of 171,560 new vehicles in August were up from 159,004 a year ago with a 14% rise in truck sales offsetting flat car sales. This was the fifth monthly sales record this year with year to date sales up a 4.6% 1,256,649 vehicles.
Top of the charts in August was Ford for a fifth consecutive month with sales up 2.6% to 27,988. Truck sales climbed 10.4% to 22,539 while car sales fell to 5,449 vehicles.
Chrysler Canada posted a 22% sales increase, to 26,825 cars and trucks, its biggest August sales ever and best YTD sales on record. General Motors saw a 4.8% August sales increase, to 22,111 vehicles with truck sales up 7.3% to 16,089 while car sales dipped 1.1% to 6,022.
Honda and Acura sales rose 44% to 13,663 while Toyota Canada said monthly sales were up 4.8% to 18,487 with a 9.2% increase in truck sales to 8,978, a new August record.
